Housewarming Canvas Prints: 23 Welcome-Home Gift Ideas

Cartographic canvas print featuring National Geographic Map
A map reimagined as wall art.

Housewarming gifts compete with a mountain of moving-day bottles of wine, scented candles, kitchen utensil sets and “this house runs on coffee and chaos” signs. The differentiator for canvas wall art is that it actually fills the empty walls — and new-home walls are the emptiest walls a household ever has. People moved in three weeks ago, the boxes are mostly unpacked, and the walls are still completely blank.

Twenty-three picks for housewarming gifting in Australia, organised by who you’re gifting and what kind of home they’ve moved into. Most pieces $80-$250.

The housewarming gift problem

New-home owners or first-time renters in a “real” apartment have one specific need: art for empty walls. They’ve spent the moving budget on furniture, white goods and the bond. The lounge is set up, the bedroom has a bed, and the walls look like a developer brochure. A canvas that fills a 90×60cm space above the couch turns the lounge from “we just moved in” into “this is our place” in twenty minutes of hanging.

The trick is picking a piece that fits the kind of home they’ve actually moved into.

For a first-purchase, first-home buyer ($150-$250 band)

First-home buyers have stretched the deposit, are usually budget-careful for the first 12 months, and don’t have wall art saved up. A canvas at the $150-$250 level becomes their first proper piece. Pick something that anchors a room rather than just decorates it.

1. The Voyager Push Pin World Map. 90×60cm. Becomes the lounge or study anchor for a decade.

2. The Australia-Pacific Push Pin Map. 100×70cm. Especially good for first-home buyers who hike, surf, road-trip Australia.

3. A landscape canvas of their hometown or holiday spot. 90×60cm above the lounge sofa. Landscape range.

4. A custom photo-to-canvas of moving day or the house keys. Photo-to-canvas at 75×50cm. Slight risk — needs a strong original photo. The “first-night standing in the empty kitchen” photo is the classic.

For an apartment-mover (renter or owner, $80-$150 band)

Apartment moves usually mean smaller walls, lower ceilings (2.4m typical), and the no-nails-in-the-wall rental constraint for many. Stick to 60×40cm and 50×70cm. 3M Strips hold these on rental walls.

5. Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Apartment-friendly classic. 60×40cm.

6. The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Reads well in narrow apartment lounges. 60×40cm.

7. Banksy’s Balloon Girl. Apartment-friendly. 50×70cm.

8. A floral canvas at 50×70cm. Floral range.

For a new homeowner with a renovation underway ($120-$200 band)

Renovation-mid-flight households are in a weird state — half the walls are blank, half have been freshly painted, and a Pinterest-curated palette is in progress. Pieces that match the emerging palette get hung; pieces that fight it get stored.

Best bet: ask which room is finished first. Then gift for that room specifically.

9. Leonardo’s Last Supper. 100×50cm above the dining room — once the dining room is finished.

10. A William Morris botanical. For renovation kitchens with green or sage palettes. William Morris piece. 75×50cm.

11. A Rothko-style colour-field canvas in their accent colour. 100×100cm. Rothko piece.

For a downsizer’s new place ($120-$200 band)

Downsizers — retirees moving from a family home to an apartment or smaller house — have established taste and accumulated art. A new piece for the new place needs to feel like a thoughtful addition, not a duplicate.

12. Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring. 50×70cm in a hallway or guest room.

13. Melody of the Night. Soft, atmospheric. 60×40cm.

14. A monochrome (B&W) Australian landscape. Mature aesthetic. 75×50cm.

For young-couple-first-place housewarmings ($80-$150 band)

15. Banksy’s Umbrella Raingirl. Romantic-housewarming overlap. 60×40cm.

16. Colourful Rain. 50×70cm.

17. A personalised lunar-phases canvas of moving-in night. Lunar Phases personalised art. 60×40cm in a bedroom or hallway.

18. A song-lyric canvas of the song that was playing on move-in. Sheet-music bespoke art. 60×80cm.

For a friend who’s just moved interstate

19. A landscape canvas of where they used to live. So they have a visual anchor of the old city in the new home. 60×40cm. Browse landscapes.

20. A landscape of where they’ve just moved. The opposite — celebrating the new city. Also 60×40cm.

21. The National Geographic Map. Geography-and-movement piece. 60×40cm.

For the friend who’s moved into a beach house

22. Australian coastal photography canvas. See Australian coastal photography for 2026. 75×50cm.

23. The Endless Summer. Beach-house perfect. 60×40cm.

What to skip

Skip “Home Sweet Home” word-art — every second housewarming gift is one of these and they end up in cupboards. Skip pieces with the suburb or address on them — these date the gift to the current address and become awkward if they move in 2-3 years. Skip overly-trendy pieces — terrazzo prints, Aperol-orange gradients, the current Pinterest aesthetic ages fast.

Sizing for housewarming

Empty new-home walls are deceptive. They look bigger than they are. A 60×40cm canvas alone on a 3-metre-wide lounge wall looks postage-stamp. Either go 90×60cm minimum for the lounge anchor wall, or gift a triptych of three 40×60cm pieces. The size guide has the room-by-room maths.

Hang at 145-150cm centre-line — 60% of new homeowners hang too high on first attempt; a gift with a note suggesting the right height is the small detail that lands.
