Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko was born Markus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia), in 1903. His family emigrated to Portland, Oregon, in 1913. He died in his New York studio in 1970. The mature work, the floating rectangle paintings most people picture when they hear the name, started around 1949 and ran for two decades.

The Rothko signature is the soft-edged rectangle. Two or three blocks of colour stacked vertically, their edges feathered rather than ruled, hovering against a slightly different ground colour. He thinned his pigments with rabbit-skin glue and laid down dozens of glazes so the colour seems to glow from inside the canvas rather than sitting on it. Number 14 (1960), Orange and Yellow (1956), Black on Maroon (1958) are the most-reproduced.

Rothko reads as serious abstract painting, but the colour relationships, deep orange against burnt red, mustard yellow against violet, suit Australian mid-century revival interiors moving through Melbourne and Sydney from 2024 onward. A 120cm tall canvas in a warehouse apartment, or a quieter 80cm piece in a Brisbane lounge with afternoon shade, gives the eye somewhere to rest.
