Absolutely, you are more than welcome to come to either of our facilities in Noosa, QLD, or Booragoo, Perth, WA. Please do, however, give us a call before coming so we can make sure someone is out front. We spend a lot of time out back around noisy machinery, so the front desk is not always manned.
Will I receive a proof for personalised art, and can I make changes
es — for all personalised artwork, we always send a digital proof before anything goes to print so you can see exactly how your design will look first. This gives you the chance to check wording, layout, colours, spelling, dates, locations or any other personal details before production begins. Proofs are usually sent within 48 hours of ordering, and very often much sooner, depending on the design and the time the order is placed. We know personalised artwork often carries important meaning, so we want customers to feel completely confident before the final print is produced. You are also very welcome to request changes once you receive the proof. In fact, we encourage it. If there is anything you would like adjusted, whether a small wording change or a more noticeable layout tweak, we encourage it. We continue refining the design until you are 100% happy with the result. Nothing is printed until you have approved the proof, which means you can order knowing there is still a chance to fine-tune the artwork before it is made.

The Night Watch by Rembrandt: A Masterpiece of Dutch Golden Age Art

Rembrandt van Rijn’s The Night Watch, completed in 1642, is one of the most celebrated paintings of the Dutch Golden Age and a quintessential example of Baroque art. Officially titled “Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq”, this monumental work stands out for its dramatic use of light and shadow, dynamic composition, and the vivid portrayal of its subjects. Unlike traditional group portraits of the time, which were often static and formal, Rembrandt infused this painting with energy and movement, transforming a conventional militia portrait into a lively action scene.

At first glance, The Night Watch appears to depict a nocturnal event due to its dark tones and heavy use of chiaroscuro. However, this perception resulted from the varnish darkening over time; the scene actually takes place during the day. Restoration efforts have revealed that Rembrandt masterfully manipulated light to create depth and focus, with sunlight streaming in from the left side of the canvas. This illumination highlights the central figures—Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, dressed in black with a red sash, and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch, clad in a pale yellow outfit—drawing the viewer’s attention directly to them.

One of the painting’s most remarkable aspects is its composition. Rembrandt broke away from the traditional, orderly arrangements typical of group portraits. Instead, he organized the militiamen in a dynamic formation, capturing them in mid-action as they prepare to march out. The figures overlap and interact, some loading muskets, others hoisting flags or beating drums. This approach creates a sense of depth and motion, making the scene feel alive and immersive. The use of diagonals and varied poses adds to the overall dynamism, showcasing Rembrandt’s innovative artistry.

Symbolism plays a significant role in The Night Watch. Among the bustling crowd, a young girl dressed in gold stands out, despite not being a member of the militia. She carries a chicken with prominent claws hanging from her belt, a reference to the Kloveniers, or musketeers, as the Dutch word for claw is “klauw.” This clever inclusion serves both as a company mascot and a symbolic element, adding layers of meaning to the painting. Additionally, the presence of a boy carrying a powder horn further enriches the narrative and highlights Rembrandt’s attention to detail.

The painting’s monumental size—measuring approximately 12 feet high by 14 feet wide (363 cm × 437 cm)—adds to its grandeur and impact. Over the centuries, The Night Watch has endured numerous challenges, including being trimmed on all four sides in 1715 to fit between two columns in Amsterdam’s Town Hall. It also survived vandalism and relocation during World War II. Despite these adversities, the painting remains a treasured masterpiece and a symbol of Dutch national pride, housed prominently in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

In recent years, The Night Watch has been the focus of extensive restoration and research efforts, notably the high-tech “Operation Night Watch” project launched by the Rijksmuseum. This initiative aims to preserve the painting for future generations and gain deeper insights into Rembrandt’s techniques and creative process. The enduring appeal of The Night Watch lies not only in its artistic brilliance but also in its ability to engage viewers with its rich storytelling and historical significance. It stands as a testament to Rembrandt’s genius and his lasting impact on the world of art.
