The Canvas Prints Australia Difference
What our Customers Say
Moonlight, released in 2016, was a groundbreaking coming-of-age drama that told the deeply personal story of a young African-American boy named Chiron as he navigated life in a rough Miami neighbourhood. The film was structured in three distinct chapters, each focusing on a different stage of Chiron’s life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. This triptych format allowed audiences to witness how his identity, relationships, and sense of self evolved in response to both internal struggles and external pressures. Rather than relying on heavy dialogue or exposition, Moonlight conveyed much of its emotional depth through visual storytelling, silence, and expressive performances.
Directed by Barry Jenkins and based on the unpublished semi-autobiographical play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney, the film stood out for its lyrical approach to storytelling. Jenkins used natural light, close-ups, and intimate camera work to draw viewers into Chiron’s world. The film was also notable for its sensitive handling of masculinity and sexuality, exploring the challenges of growing up gay in an environment where vulnerability was often seen as weakness. The relationship between Chiron and the character Juan—a drug dealer who becomes a compassionate father figure—offered a nuanced look at complex human connections in a setting frequently depicted in far less sympathetic terms.
The performances in Moonlight were widely praised, particularly because three different actors portrayed Chiron across the film’s timeline—Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes. Despite never appearing on screen together, the trio managed to create a cohesive and believable character arc. Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of Juan earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar. The film’s score, composed by Nicholas Britell, added a haunting and elegant backdrop that enhanced the emotional weight of the narrative, blending classical music with chopped-and-screwed hip-hop influences.
Moonlight was not only a critical success but also a significant moment in cinematic history. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture—famously announced in a now-infamous mix-up at the 2017 Oscars—and was celebrated for being the first film with an all-Black cast and the first LGBTQ-themed film to win the top prize. Its legacy endures as a powerful piece of visual storytelling that challenged stereotypes and expanded the scope of what stories mainstream cinema could tell. As a work of art, Moonlight offered a quiet yet profound meditation on identity, love, and the human need for connection.
